The DPP has today published the third report in its Design for Tomorrow series. Libraries and Archives: Managing Media Inventory identifies the key success factors for the design of future facing content collections and repositories. The work draws on the insight of around 50 subject matter experts, and was enabled by DPP member companies SDVI, Masstech, and ObjectMatrix.
Whether for active reuse and monetisation, or for long term cultural preservation, libraries of content must be safe, accessible, and organised. This stage of the media supply chain involves processes from digitisation and ingest to metadata management, and from preservation planning to retrieval and exploitation. It must balance longevity and security with agility and efficiency.
“A world in lockdown has been hungry for content, just at a time when less new content could be created,” says DPP CTO and author of the report, Rowan de Pomerai. “So library content has become more important than ever before. We set out to explore how companies can maximise the value of their archives, and ensure that they’re fit for an uncertain future.”
Libraries and Archives: Managing Media Inventory identifies six key success factors for achieving the resilience and responsiveness now required of a modern media company.
Within those factors is specific guidance on subjects such as:
- Approaches for understanding and maximising the value of content
- Flexible and efficient methods for managing metadata
- How connected lakes of content can make the archive accessible
- Means for mitigating risks, and maintaining content integrity
- The importance of agility in managing even the most static of archives
“No longer is an archive just somewhere that content goes at the end of its journey” says de Pomerai, “Instead it is now an integral part of the supply chain. We call our media files ‘assets’ because they have intrinsic value, and whether through protecting our culture or enabling the next big streaming service, unlocking that value is more important than ever before.”
A DPP webcast on 1 October will explore the findings of the report. Members can download Libraries and Archives: Managing Media Inventory below.
