The DPP has today published a summary report of its first ever DPP European Broadcaster Summit, where broadcasters from across Europe came together in Berlin to share and discuss key messages with their supplier community.
The report provides a summary of the themes that emerged, including questions that were raised about the way European broadcasters see themselves, their challenges, and their relationships with suppliers.
“The DPP European Broadcaster Summit was a unique workshop style event which enabled intimate discussions between broadcasters and suppliers,” says DPP CEO and author of the report Mark Harrison. “On Broadcaster Day, we brought together 28 senior executives from 14 major broadcasters for peer to peer exchange. They were then joined on Industry Day by 62 suppliers for a playback of key messages - and an opportunity to share their perspectives with the broadcasters.”
Participating broadcasters were BBC, ITV, RTÉ, RTL Nederland, RTVE, SVT, TG4, TV2 Denmark, TV2 Nord, TV2 Norway, UKTV, VRT, Yle, ZDF, and ZDF Studios with Bauer Media Group and Studio Hamburg as special guests.
Workshops were split into six key topics; Making cloud pay, Making metadata work, Unified content workflows, Preparing for a future of IP distribution, Committing to sustainability, and Can shared infrastructure ever work? These were decided after a series of conversations with the broadcasters.
The most significant finding to emerge was that European broadcasters find change more difficult the further they go upstream towards content production. Downstream – in content management and distribution – they have a clearer vision of what they want to be: technology companies that specialise in media.
“Broadcasters are on a journey towards agile software product development that enables them to deliver services that provide real value for consumers,” adds Mark Harrison. “What they really value is partnerships with vendors that understand this journey, and are committed to working with them to deliver rapid business outcomes.”
The DPP European Broadcaster Summit was enabled by Headline Sponsor Red Bee Media, Supporting Sponsors Akamai, Brightcove, NPAW, Ross Video, Signiant and Qvest, and Contributing Sponsors Amagi and Pebble.
