Back in 2018 when we first created our internal sustainability initiative Green Bee, we did so in order to start establishing a mindset across the organization where sustainability is a part of the way we work as a company globally.
We were already ISO Certified through our Environmental Management System (EMS), but this will only get you so far in terms of becoming a truly sustainable business. During the past two years we have established a network across the world, with sustainability champions in all our sites, raising awareness and initiating local and global sustainability projects and initiatives. These initiatives include eliminating disposable plastic cups across the company, increased recycling amenities in the UK, and adopting a street in the US.
Centrally, we have set annual measurable targets to decrease our carbon footprint by reducing energy consumption and business travel. Covid-19 obviously made sure our business travel was kept to an absolute minimum this year, which showed us that it is possible to reduce travel significantly without losing too much traction in your business. When it comes to energy consumption, we recently started using renewable energy for our datacenter facilities. Most importantly, our cloud-based platform has sustainability built in as a core feature, and heat extraction and cooling in our data center is highly efficient.
Lasting change requires widespread awareness, communication and cooperation, which is what we are trying to achieve internally at Red Bee. This is also the reason we support and believe in the DPP Committed to Sustainability Programme. By supporting this initiative, we hope to enable knowledge-sharing and cooperation across the media industry – with a more sustainable and greener future as the result.
Today, there is no denying the business benefits of showing a real commitment to sustainability. More and more companies in the media industry are expecting their customers, suppliers and partners to take responsibility for their impact on the environment. We want to help accelerate this development and, at the same time, increase the dialogue in our industry and establish best practices for sustainability. We believe the DPP Committed to Sustainability Programme is the most effective platform for achieving these goals together, and that the more companies and organizations that join, the greater the impact will be.
We firmly believe that we have a duty to our colleagues, our customers and the planet to do whatever we can to promote sustainable working practices in our industry. In the months to come, we are looking forward to working with the DPP and its members to create lasting change.
