The DPP has today published a summary report of its flagship Leaders’ Briefing conference for 2022. At the event, senior executives from around 30 major media organisations shared their three strategic priorities for the year ahead.
Attendees heard from A+E Networks, A+E Networks EMEA, Associated Press, Banijay, BBC, BT Sport, Channel 4, DAZN, Google Cloud, IMG Studios, ITN, ITV, Newen Studios, News UK, NRK, PA Media, PBS Distribution, RTE, RTL Nederland, Sky, SVT, TikTok, Thomson Reuters, TV2 Denmark, VICE Media Group, Warner Bros. Discovery, Yle, and ZDF.
This year’s event saw a significant strategic shift. After years of emphasis on building new direct to consumer services, the priority now is efficiency. Numerous speakers highlighted the need for their organisation to become more streamlined, and better at getting the basics right.
“In 2022 most media executives preferred to talk about agility, rather than efficiency. That will change in 2023,” says DPP CEO Mark Harrison. “In today’s crowded and unstable market, organisations are more focused on aligning people and technology, and removing waste.”
Media companies are coming together with their suppliers to understand what it takes to make the end to end content supply chain more efficient and productive.
Other significant insights that came out of the event were around changing relationships with both the workforce, and the wider media ecosystem:
End users are looking for partners rather than vendors and collaboration rather than competition
They are also attempting to build more intimate relationships with a more remote workforce
The delivery of value and a great customer experience will be the strategic imperative
“72% of companies made people related topics – such as wellbeing; diversity, equity and inclusion; ways of working; skills – a high level or sub theme,” adds Mark Harrison. “This is very striking but it isn’t the real story of this year’s event. That sits firmly with the determination to achieve operational effectiveness - an internal focus on simply doing things better.”
